Cu. ft x (cu. ft. factor x insulation factor)= BTU required
1. Establish the number of cu. ft. to be heated:
Width x length x height of the room = number of cu. ft.
2. Establish the variation between the outdoors and indoors requires temperature:
-20
C outdoor and +10
C required indoor = variation of 30
C.
3. Establish the cu. ft. factor:
Variation of 10
C between outdoor and indoor required temperature = Factor 0.4
Variation of 20
C between outdoor and indoor required temperature = Factor 0.6
Variation of 30
C between outdoor and indoor required temperature = Factor 0.8
Variation of 40
C between outdoor and indoor required temperature = Factor 1.0
4. Establish the insulation factor:
Insulated: Windows and walls installed = Factor 2.0
Fairly Insulated: Walls in position, no windows installed = Factor 4.0
Poorly Insulated: Few walls installed = Factor 7.0
Not Insulated: No walls and windows, only tarps = Factor 8.5
5. Calculation of BTU requirement:
Cu. ft x(cu. ft. factor x insulation factor) = BTU Required
Example:
- Room dimension: 100' x 100' x 30' = 300,000 cu. ft.
- Outdoor temperature of -20
C goal of +10
C indoor variation of 30C = Factor 0.8
- Room is insulated = Factor 2.0
(100 x 100 x 30)x(0.8 x 2) = 480,000 BTU Required
